If you’ve never wanted to visit Maine you will now. Growing up I was never super crazy about my home state. It was boring. There wasn’t anything to do unless you were completely infatuated with hunting and fishing…which I wasn’t. But now being away from it I realize all the great things that Maine has to offer. One of those great things is Monhegan Island. Monhegan Island is 13 miles off the mainland and you can get their by multiple ferries. The ferry we took was called the Balmy Day Cruise out of Boothbay Harbor- which is also an adorable corner of Maine.
The island is super small but packed with the prettiest views. There aren’t a ton of restaurants, under 5 to be exact, so if you don’t like seafood and are planning a long stay you may want to bring some granola bars. But don’t worry- there is one ice cream shop! Score! Cars aren’t allowed on the island except for the occasional pickup you’ll see carrying luggage to hotels or the Fire Truck that anyone on the island is allowed to man. There’s plenty of hiking trails and two black beaches for you to lay on.
If you can somehow get to the island across from Monhegan you can climb up a long walkway to two houses that have the potential of being so beautiful but have been abandoned for years. I was tempted to swim over to it but was very afraid of sharks eating me.
My favorite part about this little island that I want to call home someday was the quietness. We went in the midst of one of their biggest festivals so supposedly the island was crowded but it didn’t seem crowded at all. David and I would walk down the dirt roads just a few hundred feet away from people and we would stop and hear nothing but the waves breaking on the coastline and the occasional seagull.
Go visit Maine and Monhegan Island. And tell them Jaimee sent you, they all know me on the island.
Just kidding…they actually don’t. But still go.
