Watershed Floral

Sarah of Watershed Floral is a Maine wedding florist and was one of the first in the wedding industry in Maine that I got to collaborate with on a shoot (you can view that elopement shoot and Sarah’s killer florals here) and I knew I wanted to showcase her beauties on my blog and let you all know a little bit more about her. Keep on scrolling to get acquainted with the face behind this Maine wedding florist, Watershed Floral.

  • Tell me a little bit about yourself and Maine wedding florist business and why you started it
I grew up in Maine, went away for college, realized Maine is awesome, and came back. I’ve called Portland home for nearly 14 years. My floral journey began at Kennebec Flower Farm in Bowdoinham, ME where I worked for several years, literally learning about flowers from the ground up. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so when customers at the farmers’ market started asking me if I did flower arrangements for events, my wheels began to turn. I quietly grew Watershed over the course of a few years, while still working full time as a teacher, and six years ago, I took the leap into full-time flowering. I still have a lot to learn about owning a business, but I love what I do, the people I work with, and all the beautiful places this job takes me.

  • Do you source some of your flowers from local flower farms? Do you have any favorite farms you like to work with? Any farms that are open to the public to visit that you know of?
Absolutely! I source the majority of my flowers from local farms. Snell Family Farm, Broadturn Farm, East of Eden Flower Farm, and Kennebec Flower Farm are my top four.

  • How would you describe your style of floral design? How has your style evolved over the years?
Seasonal, natural, somewhat wild. I’ve definitely become more comfortable and confident as a designer over the years, which I feel is reflected in my work. I think my style has become bolder and more distinctive as I’m learned to trust my instincts when designing.

  • For those couples or their guests who are having their wedding in Maine but aren’t from here where would you suggest they go to explore Maine while they’re here?
Such a great question! Where do I start?! Visitors should definitely explore all the delicious food here in Portland. Check out the website Portland Food Map for recommendations. Wolfe’s Neck Farm and Wolfe’s Neck State Park are both beautiful. Downtown Brunswick has great shops and restaurants. Popham Beach in Phippsburg is one of my faves. The midcoast – Wiscasset. Rockport. Camden. Western Maine is also lovely. Bridgton and Norway are great little towns.

  • If you’re not designing beautiful flower arrangements, what are you doing?
Adventuring with my family. Running. Gardening. Knitting. Cooking.

Tips for Your Fine Art Engagement Session

Having an engagement session but unsure where to shoot, what to wear, how to prepare, or maybe all the things?! I’m here to give you some engagement photo tips on how to get your best photos and have the best time on your engagement session!

engagement photo tips

What’s included in your engagement session…

  • One hour session
  • Unlimited locations
  • Unlimited outfit changes
  • All of your edited images on an online gallery (where you can share, print, and download your images) with the rights to print

engagement photo tips engagement photo tips engagement photo tips

Where to shoot…

  • You can choose a location that means something meaningful to the two of you
  • Or if life is too busy and you’d rather not have the stress of finding a location, I can choose a beautiful location with lots of options. All I need to know from you is if you would prefer a nature or urban backdrop.
  • We can go to as many locations as you’d like but I suggest keeping them within walking distance so we can get as many awesome photos of you as possible without cutting into our one hour session.

What to wear…

  • Neutral colors are fabulous. Any bright color may reflect on your face and most of the time we don’t want that (we don’t want green or purple faces!!)
  • Fabrics that flow can be your best friend! A flowing dress can give so much movement to a picture while also highlighting the best parts about your body!
  • Layers are always great because your outfit can look completely different with a quick change of a jacket or scarf without having to spend time changing.

What to bring…

  • Blankets
  • Drinks (champagne, anyone?!) or snacks
  • Puppies are always welcome
  • All of the above or nothing! This is a no-stress allowed shoot so if you can’t find the perfect blanket than no problem, you’ll still have a blast and receive fabulous images!

What will the session look like…

  • Simple and easy! We won’t do any strict poses and I encourage you guys to enjoy your time together! Try to forget I’m there and just enjoy this hour together as a date.
  • We’ll hop around to different locations either within walking distance or drive (whatever we’ve discussed prior) to those places.
  • Lots of kissing, lots of hand holding, lots of me getting really excited about the shots I’m getting that I know you’re going to love.
  • You guys can change as much as you’d like though I would say keep it to 2-3 outfits in order to get enough images for you.

What does it look like after the session…

  • I will upload your images, edit them, and upload them to your online gallery.
  • You will receive an email from PASS gallery by 3 weeks after your shoot (check your spam folder as sometimes it gets throw in there) when your images are all uploaded to the gallery.
  • You have the rights to print your images where ever you’d like but you can also print them directly from the gallery which will go to a professional printer and be sent directly to you.

Why to have a First Look

Conflicted between having a First Look or going the traditional route of seeing each other when you walk down the aisle? I just wanted to give some tips on why I think a First Look is a fabulous option.

First Look why have a first look why have a first look

I had a First Look and loved it!

I was a bride once and I had a First Look because it was necessary for timing reasons. But I thought it would take away from that momentous occasion when I would walk down the aisle towards him. However, I’m here to say the moment I saw my husband during our First Look was a completely different moment and feeling from the time I saw him at the end of the aisle. Nothing was lost and there was so much gained…the precious moments we got to talk together about my dress, about our day thus far was such a special time for me. We got to stay there, hand in hand, embracing and crying/laughing/smiling together for as long as we wanted and then we got to be together for the rest of the day. And then that moment came when I walked down the aisle and the same butterfly excitement came back but it was a completely different feeling of excitement because everyone was there. I don’t regret anything about having a first look!

You can enjoy more of your wedding day together!

No explanation needed there!

why have a first look

It allows you to have more time with your guests after the ceremony!

Because we can get all the “portrait” photos like bridal party, family formals, bride & groom portraits done before the ceremony this allows you to enjoy cocktail hour with your guests. Who doesn’t want to get to the cocktails quicker?!

You will LOVE the photos from it!

Though I want you to feel so comfortable in front of my camera, I do understand that it can be a little intimidating to be in front of the camera. But during the first look, most couples completely forget I’m there because I’m silent the whole time and thus making me able to capture the most genuine smiles and laughter from even the most camera shy. Photos from the First Look are often some of my most favorite photos!

Tulum

Tulum. Oh, sweet Tulum. Tulum was a much needed vacation from life and was the best refreshing experience I’ve had. And chilling with some good friends, Shasta & Maria, was also a big plus. Tulum isn’t the biggest place in the world but it hosted some of the prettiest landscapes, yummiest food, and enough activity to keep you busy without feeling overwhelmed. Every day we would wake up at our Air BnB bike down to the beach a couple miles down to the beach stretch. Speaking of our Air BnB- it was fabulous! Our host was awesome, the area of Tulum that it was in is up and coming- there were a ton of condos going up while we were there. Our condo had a shared pool that we dipped in throughout the day and a sun roof where we stayed for a minute or two before being completely fried.

One thing that is fabulous about Tulum is that there are so many unique hotels on the beach that offer a beach club which essentially means you can use all of their amenities for just the price of a drink or lunch.  This was the best way to get to view so many unique spaces, sleep in cabanas, while getting waited on without having to pay the massive costs of some of these hotels rooms.

My favorite restaurant/beach club/hotel that we visited was Habitas. As we came through their gate we were immediately in the middle of the jungle. We walked through some paths of incense and then made it to the restuarant- this very modern, open air structure on the beach. We were seated at a table that was barely hovering over the sand. We sat on cushions and looked out at the crashing waves and infinity pool. I just kept saying “this is the prettiest place I’ve ever been” and it truly was.

We visited a million other spots like Pablo Escobar’s old home that has been turned into a boutique hotel called Casa Malca, the Mayan Ruins (it was super hot and super touristy so it wasn’t the most enjoyable time but maybe next time we’ll go early in the morning and miss the traffic), and our favorite dining spot was Mi Amor. If you ever find yourself at the most perfect place, Mi Amor, where you have the ocean on one side and a swimming moat on the other, floating cabanas, and 5 star food, make sure you ask for Edwin- he was the sweetest waiter I’ve had to date and we all loved him and his service so much! Also, get the Hangover Smoothie- supes yummy.

We planned on doing a shoot while in Tulum but some ends didn’t come together well so we ended up not being able to do it so if anyone wants to do one I still have an itch to shoot in this beautiful place! Especially if anyone needs a Tulum wedding photographer- you know how to reach me!

I’m so thankful for this trip. For the time to reconnect with friends. For the time to get refreshed and reenergized- I was waking up at 5am fully rested and ready for the day! For the time to explore and be inspired by new things…sorry David for me wanting to change my entire wardrobe into mexican style pieces and change all our decor to pom-poms and bright colored tapestries.
