Often I’ve had to photograph the family formals in a dark church or dark lobby because it’s raining/freezing outside. I totally understand the bride and groom not wanting to stand out in pouring rain for forty-five minutes, I don’t either! But if the weather is good I would highly stress that either outdoors or an area that is highly lit/naturally lit would be the best option for any pictures.
Here is a prime example-

This shot was taken out in front of the family barn. Notice the crispness of everything that needs to be crisp. The lighting is all natural, so the skin color is all natural looking. And the image is more 3 dimensional.

This next picture, as you can see, was taken in a dark church building. The carpet was green so I couldn’t bounce my flash off from that and the ceilings were a bazillion feet tall so I couldn’t bounce my flash off that…all this means is that I had to shine my flash directly on them.

This not only gives a shadowing effect behind each person but it also makes those cheeks, t-zones, and even bald spots oh so shiny. And my least favorite part about it is that it looks so studio stiff.

So…brides…if you can, let’s aim for pictures outside and I promise you’ll like the product a lot better!
