Always Piper | Maine Makers Series

I have been following Caitlin of Always Piper on Instagram for a while now. I’m a sucker for quality made, small batch clothes that are more oversized and boxy in shape- they’re practical for every day use where whether that be gardening, meeting with brides and grooms, or chasing after kids. And then put on a pair of heels and a leather jacket and you’ve got yourself the perfect evening outfit. I’m also a sucker for locally made clothes so this Maine made clothing company is on my list of the best of the best! Well, Always Piper fits that bill perfectly. BUT they don’t just make clothes, they make the prettiest textiles for your home! I headed over to Caitlin’s Portland Maine house to shoot her and her Always Piper clothes,  pillows, table runners, and all the other lovely things that I would gladly take! Keep scrolling to see some of my favorite pieces and read a little questionnaire about Always Piper!

-Tell us a little bit about Always Piper!
Like many brands Always Piper started because I could not find what I was looking for on the market. In my case it was a beach cover up that wasn’t sheer and could also be worn as a shirt over pants. I remember picking up that first batch of “Island Tunics” just a few years ago with such excitement, I could hardly believe they were mine. In addition to offering women’s garments we have expanded to include a beautiful linen bedding line as well as home decor items including table linens and throw pillows utilizing shibori resist dyeing techniques.
-What sets you apart from other brands?
Our brand offers women’s wear and home goods that strike a balance of both utility and luxury for the earth conscious consumer. We believe working with sustainable fabrics is a big deal. A dress or a blanket is not beautiful if the making of it was harmful to people or the environment. Our quality is notable to the smallest details like; lining up the stripes on both sides of a pillowcase or the pefect placement of deep useful pockets on a dress. We produce our designs right here in Maine which means a lot to us and we believe that is valued by our customers as well. Hearing from a happy customer who tells us they didn’t know what they were missing until they experienced our linen sheets tells us that we are providing something special. I believe we are a “stop and smell the roses” kind of a brand.
-Where are you based out of?
I have worked from my home right here in Portland’s west end from the start. It was definitely tough at first when I was making large items like blankets here in my dining room. Lint and fibers would settle throughout the house and cleaning up was a constant chore. Now that most of our production is completed by local contract sewers, working from home feels like a privilege. I can easily work on designing, sourcing and small batch dyeing here and I really don’t long for that separation between work and home.

Maine made clothing again…this jumpsuit and Kaftan are making my world go around!

-What is your favorite Always Piper piece?
I am usually the most excited about whatever I am currently working on but our Kaftan from this past season is my dream dress. It is one piece dressing that is effortless and comfortable. It is meant to be casual but there is something special about a long dress, it’s a gown of sorts so I hope it makes you feel a little bit like a goddess.
-What can we look forward to seeing from Always Piper this coming year?
There will be a couple of great staple wardrobe pieces coming this spring / summer. Adding to our bedding line – linen duvet covers are in the works. We are also very excited about carrying beautifully crafted goods from other makers that align with our brand. You can expect to see ceramics, cutting boards, and hopefully some great bags!

Kettle Cove Wedding | Cape Elizabeth, Maine

What a magical day it was to shoot a sunrise Kettle Cove wedding in Cape Elizabeth Maine! As soon as I arrived to Kettle Cove at the ripe hour of 7:00am the fog was lifting off the ocean, giving this hazy purple band across the sea. I had to hold my tears in as I started to think how lucky I was to live in this beautiful state of Maine. A few lobstermen were getting into their boats and riding off into the Atlantic to start their day and a handful of boats were still sitting in the harbor just swaying back and forth in the soft wind. This wasn’t a typical wedding- it was a styled shoot but man oh man, if I could convince anyone of anything I would convince them to do a sunrise elopement at Kettle Cove. Kettle Cove was riddled with seashells and driftwood and the water had made a beautiful wavy pattern on the beach.

I had the priviledge of working with Whitney of Whitewood Events and Sarah of Watershed Floral for this styled Kettle Cove wedding. Whitewood Events is actually based in Georgia but Whitney was traveling up to Maine to see the fall leaves and wanted to create the most out of her trip! It was such a blast working with both Whitney and Sarah and the adorable couple- seriously, he was British, she was gorgeous, they met in Spain, he moved to America to be with her…does a love story get any better than that?!

Their gorgeous bouquet and boutonnière was made by the extremely talented Sarah of Watershed Floral based in Portland Maine.

Pure Barre Studio Portland Maine

Exercise is so important to me and I’ve tried many different forms. I’ve trained for a half marathon, done P90X 3 times, regularly ran, and done the whole meandering around at the gym. Then I found Barre and I was sold. It’s so intense, you can’t really plateau because you can always go deeper and harder, it’s gentle on your joints, it produces great results, and it’s attainable- I never am intimated to start a work out or on those days when I’m exhausted or not feeling well I know I can still get a great workout by just making some alterations. I even trained to be an instructor when I was back in Minneapolis at The Barre but then became pregnant and realized I had a little too much on my plate. Thankfully Jamie reached out and told me that she was opening a Portland Maine Pure Barre Studio and I was so pumped to hear that there was a new studio opening just a couple blocks from my house in the Old Port on Fore St!

Jamie told me that she had gotten an industrial venue for her Portland Maine Pure Barre team to shoot in and when I got there I was pumped! They used to hold weddings in this venue- which I would have died to photograph- but for now they let us set up a Portland Maine Pure Barre Studio for a shoot.

Head over to Portland Maine Pure Barre to read all about them and set up a time to come life.tone.burn with us! Hope to see you there!

Portland Maine Pure Barre Studio

Pure Barre is the fastest, most effective, yet safest way to change your body.

In less than an hour you will achieve a full-body workout concentrating on the areas women struggle with the most: hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms. The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk. The technique works to defy gravity by tapering everything in and lifting it up!

The concentration involved while taking Pure Barre allows you to block “life” out during class, creating the mental benefits similarly obtained by the practice of yoga or meditation. A transformed body and a clear head in under an hour—it doesn’t get much better than this.

Maine Christmas Party

Oh, Christmas, how I love everything about you. For my first Maine Christmas since 2008 we have made sure that this is a Christmas season we wont forget. We’ve already done the Christmas tree cutting down- and also found out about this thing where you can go prior and tag your tree, why have we never heard of this?!- decking the halls with garland, stockings, fur everything, baked the cutout cookies, experienced a Christmas wonderland at Magnolia Market, went to a Maine Christmas tree lighting in Portland…ok I’ll stop there because the list could go on and on.

To add to the holiday spirit, I got to photograph a pretty little, styled Maine Christmas dinner with Back Bay Bride. I was so honored when Kelsey of Back Bay Bride asked me to join her and some other Maine vendors to create a “First Christmas Together” styled shoot and I happily said yes! We broke some bulbs, drank some champagne, and enjoyed some more moments of Christmas cheer. Keep scrolling to read Kelsey’s write up about the shoot and see images from the dinner!

As a wedding and event planner, one of my most favorite things to do is host! The holiday season is
such a wonderful time of year not just because everything has that extra layer of sparkle (and
greenery!) but because they are so many chances to gather together with the ones you love.
This holiday season is our first as a married couple in a house instead of an apartment, and I was so
excited to decorate for the holidays and entertain guests. I loved having this chance to pull out
some of our most special wedding gifts for the first time and set the scene for a festive dinner party.
Here are a few holiday hosting tips for the nearly or newlyweds to try!
1. Stick to your color palette – Red and green can be so cheery and fun, but we’ve decorated
our house in neutrals and cool tones. I wanted to keep the décor natural to compliment the
vibe we’ve worked so hard to create in our home! Beautiful greenery designed by Stem &
Vine went a long way to elevate our décor for the winter months.
2. Set a special table – This is it, the moment you’ve been waiting for! Time to pull that
crystal and china you painstakingly researched and added to your registry and display it in all
its glory on your holiday tablescape. Cloth napkins and a linen runner also take it from the
everyday to elegant. Seasonal touches like ornaments, pinecones and pine boughs are
thoughtful details that won’t go unnoticed and no setting is complete without a place card.
Mine were handlettered along with other accents by one of my favorite local artists, Letter &
Adore.
3. Keep the menu simple – You may be tempted to roast a turkey or braise a ham like they
do at Grandma’s house but if you’re not a tried and true chef it’s best to keep things easy.
This rosemary garlic chicken recipe looks fancy but can be prepared in advance and kept
warm in the oven while you mix and mingle.
4. Try a DIY – we don’t have a light fixture above our table so I hung a few clear ornaments
as a DIY chandelier. Something crafty is always a great conversation starter.
5. Create a cozy feel – Moving from the city, we absolute love our wood burning fireplace
and my husband takes every chance he gets to build a fire! But even if you don’t have that
option, lighting extra candles or stringing up more lights creates a warm and inviting feel for
your guests.
